A superb pair of Chelsea oval dishes, of Duke of Cambridge type
A superb pair of Chelsea oval dishes, of Duke of Cambridge type, boldly painted in coloured enamels with clusters of fruits, vegetables and leaves, the border with four bold butterflies or winged insects, within scroll moulded pale blue and gilt cartouches, alternating with fruits and leaves, turquoise rim, 11 1/8" wide, circa 1763-65, brown anchor marks
Provenance; A service of this pattern was owned by Adolphus, Duke of Cambridge, seventh son of King George III, however the service was probably commissioned by his uncle, William Henry Duke of Gloucester. The decoration of the current service, most likely decorated by outside atelier, is interesting to compare to the celebrated Worcester Duke of Gloucester Service.
Four oval dishes from this service are in the Royal Collection, Windsor Castle
