A Flight Worcester deep plate, from the 'Hope' Service, painted en grisaille by John Pennington with a figure emblematic of Hope, within a gilt roundel, the blue ground rim richly decorated in gilt with oval paterae, arched panels, dots and stars, 9 1/2" diameter, circa 1792, script mark in blue beneath a crown and above a crescent
Provenance( From the celebrated service commissioned from the Flight factory by H R H The Duke of Clarence, later King William IV in 1789 at a cost of £700. The service, comprising 260 pieces, was completed in 1792. It was displayed to the public at the Worcester factory to much acclaim before it was despatched. The Duke used the service at Bushey Park, and it was then inherited by Lord Frederick FitzClarence, and by family descent to Charles, 20th Earl of Errol, until sold Christie's, London, 11th May 1893, lots 104-165
