A rare Worcester yellow ground basket, cover and stand
Provenance:
John Gough Collection
A rare Worcester oval basket, pierced cover and stand, the twig loop handles with applied flower and leaf terminals, painted in coloured enamels with flowers and leaves, within gilt cartouches, on a blue scale ground, with pale yellow borders, moulded or pierced with flower heads, picked out in puce, gilt line rims, 11 1/2" wide overall, circa 1770, blue fret marks
Although often referred to as chestnut baskets, these were probably originally used to serve cream as part of a dessert service
