A superb Copeland sauce tureen, cover and stand
A superb Copeland oval sauce tureen, cover and stand, with two scroll handles and entwined knop, copying the celebrated Chelsea Mecklenburg-Strelitz Servive, finely painted in coloured enamels with exotic birds in wooded landscapes, butterflies and other insects, the blue ground border decorated in raised paste gilding with butterflies and insects, 10 1/4" wide overall, circa 1890-1900, printed marks in gilt and retailers mark for Thomas Goode and Co, and pattern number C200W
This service was commissioned by Thomas Goode in the 1880's, and is a direct copy of the service given by King George III and Queen Charlotte to the Queen's brother, the Duke of Mecklenburg-Strelitz. A Copeland service of this model was exhibited at the Paris Exhibition in 1889, and bought by HM The King of Greece.Another was presented by the people of Norwich to King George V and Queen Mary on their marriage.
